Professor in Computational Linguistics Type of employment: Permanent post Extent: 100 % Location: Department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of Science, Göteborg First day of employment: As soon as possible Reference number: PER 2012/76 Subject area Computational Linguistics Specific subject description Resarch environment: Research in Computational Linguistics at the department is conducted in areas such as dialogue systems, computational semantics and linguistic aspects of web science. The department plays a leading role in masters and doctoral education in language technology both within the Gothenburg environment and nationally, through GSLT, the national graduate school of language technology. It is a leading contributor to the center for Language Technology (CLT), an interdisciplinary research center in which the department is one of the collaborating departments together with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the Department of Swedish and Department of Applied IT. The computational linguistics group at the department leads the Dialogue Technology Lab within the Center. Computational linguistics research takes place in a lively interdisciplinary environment with close links to philosophy and theoretical linguistics within the department, language technology and the type theory at the department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers, and Swedish linguistics and language technology at the Department of Swedish and the Swedish Language Bank. Research on computational linguistics at Gothenburg is focused to a large extent on exploring the relationship between theoretical approaches to language and the practical needs of language technology. Job assignments The holder of this position should be established internationally as a researcher in computational linguistics, and is expected to contribute actively to the research environment of the department. In particular the successful candidate will be expected to play a leading role in the coordination of the Dialogue Technology Lab within CLT. She or he will represent computational linguistics in terms of both research and teaching in close cooperation with other disciplines such as philosophy, linguistics, logic and computer science, both in the department and with other departments within the University of Gothenburg and elsewhere. Duties include one's own research as well as overall responsibility for research and researcher training within the field of computational linguistics, together with teaching and supervision at basic, advanced, and post-graduate level. Duties also include providing information about research and development work, initiation of and involvement in planning of research projects, which also includes such tasks as actively working with applications for external research funding. Qualifications Assessment criteria: For this position, strong emphasis will be placed primarily on scientific and teaching ability. The assessment process will give equal consideration to teaching ability and scientific ability. As to scientific ability, special consideration will be given to recent research, as well as to the ability to initiate and conduct research, to lead research groups, and to successfully direct graduate training. Current publications in international journals (including submitted or accepted manuscripts), attention from the research community (e.g. through awards, visiting scholarships, etc.), and proven ability to obtain external funding are particularly valued. Assessment of teaching abilities will take account of experience of planning, implementation, and assessment of teaching, as well as of supervision and examination, in particular at the masters and doctoral level. Management skills and administrative experience, together with experience of interaction with the surrounding society, are also of benefit.
