Professor in Computational Linguistics

Type of employment: Permanent post
Extent: 100 %
Location: Department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of Science, Göteborg First day of
employment: As soon as possible Reference number: PER 2012/76 Subject area

Computational Linguistics
Specific subject description

Resarch environment: Research in Computational Linguistics at the department is conducted in areas
such as dialogue systems, computational semantics and linguistic aspects of web science. The
department plays a leading role in masters and doctoral education in language technology both
within the Gothenburg environment and nationally, through GSLT, the national graduate school of
language technology. It is a leading contributor to the center for Language Technology (CLT), an
interdisciplinary research center in which the department is one of the collaborating departments
together with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the Department of Swedish and
Department of Applied IT. The computational linguistics group at the department leads the Dialogue
Technology Lab within the Center. Computational linguistics research takes place in a lively
interdisciplinary environment with close links to philosophy and theoretical linguistics within
the department, language technology and the type theory at the department of Computer Science and
Engineering at the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers, and Swedish linguistics and language
technology at the Department of Swedish and the Swedish Language Bank. Research on computational
linguistics at Gothenburg is focused to a large extent on exploring the relationship between
theoretical approaches to language and the practical needs of language technology.

Job assignments
The holder of this position should be established internationally as a researcher in computational
linguistics, and is expected to contribute actively to the research environment of the department.
In particular the successful candidate will be expected to play a leading role in the coordination
of the Dialogue Technology Lab within CLT. She or he will represent computational linguistics in
terms of both research and teaching in close cooperation with other disciplines such as philosophy,
linguistics, logic and computer science, both in the department and with other departments within
the University of Gothenburg and elsewhere.

Duties include one's own research as well as overall responsibility for research and researcher
training within the field of computational linguistics, together with teaching and supervision at
basic, advanced, and post-graduate level. Duties also include providing information about research
and development work, initiation of and involvement in planning of research projects, which also
includes such tasks as actively working with applications for external research funding.

Qualifications

Assessment criteria: For this position, strong emphasis will be placed primarily on scientific and
teaching ability. The assessment process will give equal consideration to teaching ability and
scientific ability.

As to scientific ability, special consideration will be given to recent research, as well as to
the ability to initiate and conduct research, to lead research groups, and to successfully direct
graduate training. Current publications in international journals (including submitted or accepted
manuscripts), attention from the research community (e.g. through awards, visiting scholarships,
etc.), and proven ability to obtain external funding are particularly valued. Assessment of
teaching abilities will take account of experience of planning, implementation, and assessment
of teaching, as well as of supervision and examination, in particular at the masters and doctoral
level. Management skills and administrative experience, together with experience of interaction
with the surrounding society, are also of benefit.

Eligibility

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section
3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
