Aalto Science Fellows (in all areas of science), Helsinki, FINLAND

Aalto University is a new university with over a century of experience.
Created from a high-profile merger between three leading universities in Finland - the Helsinki
School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design
Helsinki - Aalto University opens up new possibilities for strong multidisciplinary education
and research. The university has 20 000 students and a staff of
5 000 including 350 professors.

The Aalto Science Institute invites nominations and applications for:

   3-5 AALTO SCIENCE FELLOWS

The Fellows have freedom and support to pursue their research agenda independently, with
opportunities for collaboration with research groups at the Departments of the Aalto University
School of Science.
Interdisciplinary work is encouraged, but top-quality scientific research is the primary
requirement. The length of the contract period is three years.

Nomination

Fellows can be nominated by established academics by contacting the Dean of the School of Science,
Professor Kimmo Kaski (tel. +358-9-470 24825, e-mail kimmo.kaski@aalto.fi). Please provide a brief
description of the candidate and your expression of support for the nomination. Selected candidates
will then be requested by the Institute to submit a full application. Interested candidates may
also apply directly by submitting a full application as described below.

Application procedure

The candidate should send their application per e-mail to the Aalto University registry at address
"registry@aalto.fi". The cover letter should be addressed to the Dean of the School of Science,
and should contain the name and contact details of the applicant, together with a mention about
how the applicant became informed about the position. The application documents should be attached
to the e-mail in the form of a single pdf file consisting of a cover letter and the following
appendices in the indicated order:

Complete curriculum vitae describing education and employment history. If the applicant's
doctoral degree is still pending, then an up-to-date study transcript and a plan for completion of
the degree must be provided. List of publications including brief synopses and assessment of
scientific significance of at most three of the most relevant publications. A research statement
of at most three pages outlining planned work in the fellowship period, and the candidate's
motivation for pursuing the research at Aalto University.
Names and contact details of two senior academics available for reference.

Review

Review of applications begins on 3rd December 2012, and the final deadline for submissions is
14th December 2012.

In the review process, emphasis is put on the strength of the candidate's academic track record,
together with the substance, innovativeness, and feasibility of the research plan. The candidate's
potential for collaborations with other researchers at the Institute and the participating
Departments is also assessed. However, since an important goal of the programme is the
internationalization of research performed at Aalto University, the applicant should have
initiated an independent research career outside of Aalto. An excellent command of English is a
necessary prerequisite.

The salary level for the Fellows is between 3500 and 4700 €/month, depending on experience and
qualifications. The contract includes Finnish occupational health and social security benefits,
and the Institute supports the Fellows' travel up to a level of 5000 €/year.
