GECAD (Knowledge Engineering and Decision Support Research Group) is a R&D unit ranked at Very Good level and settled at the Institute of Engineering  Polytechnic of Porto, in Portugal.
 
GECAD will contract 3 researchers for 5 years. Candidates must have at least 3 years experience after PhD.
 
Annual Salary is ~42500,00 euros.

Job Reference: C2007-FCT/442/2006  GECAD/ISEP - Knowledge Based, Cognitive and Learning Systems ( on-line
 
This position is for a 5 year contract to work at research centre GECAD (Knowledge Engineering and Decision Support Research Centre, www.gecad.isep.ipp.pt), an institution in Porto, Portugal.
 
Candidates require a PhD degree obtained at 3 years ago or more.
 
Background in Computer Science and experience in the research field of Artificial Intelligence, namely in the area of Knowledge Sciences (e.g. Data Mining, Knowledge-based Systems, Knowledge Management, Ontologies, Semantic Web, Natural Language, etc) are required.
 
GECAD has several projects in the Knowledge Sciences areas, namely:
- projects in Machine Learning, Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, covering all aspects from Data preprocessing to Knowledge pos-processing;
- projects in the areas of Ontologies and Semantic Web, namely Ontological Bridging and Mapping and the connection with the Semantic Web in a Knowledge Management perspective;
- Several Knowledge-based Systems projects covering domains like Knowledge Verification, Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Incomplete Information and Konwledge, etc;
- Common ideas for projects in the area of Natural Language, in cooperation with CENTRIA/FCT-UNL.
 
In addition to the integration in GECAD  the candidate is expected to help with post-graduate teaching, including the supervision of post-graduate students, and to write research papers as well as project and grant applications.
 
The selected researcher will profit from the technical facilities and expertise available at GECAD, at the Institute of Engineering  Polytechnic of Porto (ISEP-IPP), where he/she will be stationed.
 
The selected researcher will work at GECAD/ISEP-IPP, however a strong collaboration with CENTRIA/FCT-UNL (Centre of Artificial Intelligence of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology - New University of Lisbon) is expected.

Job Reference: C2007-FCT/442/2006  GECAD/ISEP - Ambient Intelligence, Ubiquitous Computing
 
This position is for a 5 year contract to work at research GECAD (Knowledge Management and Decision Support Research Centre, www.gecad.isep.ipp.pt), an institution in Porto, Portugal.
 
Candidates require a PhD degree obtained at 3 years ago or more.
 
Background in Computer Science and experience in the research field of Informatics are expected, namely in the areas of Ambient Intelligence, Ubiquitous Computing, Embedded Systems, Context Awareness, etc.
 
Currently GECAD is working in several projects related with the concepts described before, namely:
- ArgEmotionAgents project, to be continued in Ambition project - envisaging to include Ambient Intelligence and Ubiqitous Computing in Intelligent Decision Rooms in the area of Group Decision Support Systems involving Emotion and Argumentation Support;
- FLYMASTER - involving FLYMASTER NAV+, a free-flight on-board pilot Assistant (eg. Delta aisle), using the FlyMaster F1 module with access to GPS and sensorial information. FlyMaster Avioncs S.A., a spin-off, was created to comercialize these products;
- AmICoTrainee? - a project for involving Ambient Intelligence and Context Aware in the Operators' Trainning of Control Centres (eg. in Power Systems).
 
Other projects are now being prepared, namely a project for Elderly care, a project for Tourist Support and Cultural Heritage, a project to create an intelligent interactive Glass, and a project to extend FLYMASTER ideas for other sports.

Job Reference: C2007-FCT/442/2006  GECAD/ISEP - Electricity Markets
 
This position is for a 5 year contract to work at research GECAD (Knowledge Management and Decision Support Research Centre, www.gecad.isep.ipp.pt), an institution in Porto, Portugal.
 
Candidates require a PhD degree obtained at 3 years ago or more.
 
Background in Economics and experience in the research field of Business Economics, Markets, Electricity Markets, Energy Markets are envisaged. However, it is possible to apply with background in Engineering if the previous work is related with the Economics field and can be adapted to the Electricity or Energy markets.
 
Traditionally, the power sector was based on regulated public utilities, with stable prices, predictable over a long time horizon. The risk involved on the energy business was low and power systems (PS) were centrally operated.
 
Similarly to other sectors, electricity markets (EM) have undergone a liberalization process but EM are a special case of a commodity market, due to the difficulty on storing electrical energy (EE) and to the need of a constant balance.
 
Some difficulties have arisen in EMs during the recent years requiring more attention to some issues in EM operation. Some of the occurred problems can put in risk all the EM organization and even the security of power supply.
 
Technical requirements of PS are not always adequately addressed by EM rules. This is mainly due to two main factors: little experience in competitive EM operation and the complexity of modelling relationships between PS and EM operation. This requires not only robust economic and financial background but also PS physics background. A clear understanding of the impact of PS physics on market dynamics and vice-versa is also required.
 
GECAD R&D group puts together the previous experience and knowledge of a team deeply involved in R&D activities in PS and Ems. GECAD has developed MASCEM, an EM simulator based on a Multi-Agent system, chosen to be presented by IEEE Intelligent Systems scientific magazine in its special issue Agents & Markets due to its innovative and unique characteristics. MASCEM was selected as one of the six worldwide reference works combining Agents with Markets, being the only one completely developed in Europe and the only one for Energy area.
 
GECAD work is also based on previous experience in optimization and transmission tariffs (which led to the attribution of an award by REN-National Electric Network in 2003). Transmission Zones are considered to enable an efficient management of the transmission network, taking into account congestion management. These zones determination is based on Local Marginal Prices (LMP).
 
GECAD addresses electricity price forecasting (EPF) which is difficult mainly because electricity price behaviour is not similar to other commodities price behaviour (e.g. electricity price are highly volatile), making known methods inadequate to address EPF. Several methods have been proposed but they are not really suitable to adequately support market agents decisions. GECAD proposes a new approach, based on the forecasting of a price range, with a certain confidence level α, instead of a single price value. This methodology is based on historical data, dynamically updated and combines the use of a set of neural networks and clustering techniques.
 
In competitive EM, producers need to know how to use the tools at their disposal to practice the hedge against the volatility of the spot price (namely derivatives markets negotiating forward, futures and options contracts). High price volatility associated to contracts with complex characteristics makes decision making about contract portfolio formation a hard task. Some methodologies have been proposed but they assume simplified conditions and lack the adequate use of techniques used in modern finance to evaluate uncertainties. GECAD is developing Decision-support systems (DSS) to assist electricity producers in finding the optimal contracts.
 
The aim to have power systems (PS) that can fulfill their goals, providing the required electrical energy under adequate security conditions, and guarantee the conditions for sustainable development is a huge challenge. Its accomplishment requires to significantly increasing Distributed Generation (DG) as this is mainly based on renewable resources, with obvious ecological advantages.
 
An aggregating strategy can enable owners of DG to gain technical and commercial advantages, making profit of the specific advantages of a mix of several generation technologies and overcoming serious disadvantages of some technologies. The aggregation of DG plants gives place to the new concept of Virtual Power Producers (VPP). This concept has been proposed by a few groups, including GECAD, but requires further refinements to be used in real practice bringing advantage to renewable source (RS) based energy. VPPs are multi-technology and multi-site heterogeneous entities, being relationships among aggregated producers and among VPPs and the remaining EM agents a key factor for their success.
