We are participating in the German research project Theseus-Medico. The goal of this 5 year effort is to develop intelligent image search engines for medical images by I) Developing and applying innovative and formal concepts for generic image vocabularies, image syntax and semantics II) Researching new scalable and hierarchical information representations that generalize across applications III) Developing new architectures that support semantic image search and scalable searching solutions. Responsibilities/Tasks In this position you will be conducting leading-edge research and prototyping of medical image search applications. Your main tasks will be to develop novel image descriptors and feature selection algorithms that are specific to medical images and to investigate the integration of generative and discriminative models for medical images. You will be working with German research institutes, especially the Fraunhofer-Institut für Graphische Datenverarbeitung. Additional areas of interest include semantic image parsing, semantic image annotation and semantic image search. Education We will preferably consider candidates holding a Ph.D. in CS, EE or related fields with a strong, proven record in problem solving and research (leading journal and conference publications). Knowledge: The candidate should have advanced background of using machine learning techniques for semantic analysis of image data. Furthermore, she/he will have knowledge in image descriptors, generative and discriminative models, and statistical as well as structural and syntactic pattern recognition, preferably in medical imaging.
