4th Int.l Summer School for Advanced Studies on
Biometrics for Secure Authentication:
NEW TECHNOLOGIES AND EMBEDDED SYSTEMS

Alghero,  Italy - June, 11-15 2007
===================================================
Contact: tista@uniss.it

IMPORTANT DATES:

* APPLICATION DEADLINE: February 15th  2007

                                                        http://www.computer-vision.191.it/Biomet-School.html

* Notification of acceptance: March 1st 2007

SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS

 A filled application form has to be sent to the school together with
 curriculum vitae, via e-mail to: Massimo Tistarelli - tista@uniss.it

 SCOPE:

In the last decade, several recognition and authentication systems based on biometric measurements have been proposed. Many different biological features have been utilized: fingerprint, face and facial features, retinal
scan, iris pattern, hand geometry, dna trace and gait, and others. Algorithms and sensors have been developed to acquire and process all different biometric data sources.
Not only research tools have been developed, but a notable effort has been made by many industrial companies, making biometrics a very challenging arena, fostering many diverse approaches.

What are the most up-to-date core technologies developed in the field? How well do these systems perform? What are the real and ultimate limitations of biometric recognition/authentication systems? How to develop/integrate a biometric recognition system?

This school follows the successful Summer Schools on Biometrics held in 2003, 2005 and 2006, but with a different target. In this fourth edition, the courses will mainly focus on new and emerging issues in biometrics:

* the design and application of new and emerging biometric technologies;
* techniques for evaluation and assessment of biometric applications;
* the development of biometric embedded systems.

The courses will provide a clear and in-depth picture on the state-of-the-art in biometric verification/identification technology, both under the theoretical and scientific point of view as well as in diverse application domains.
Emphasis will be given to evaluation, standardization and to define the maturity of technology for deployment of biometrics in a wide range of applications.
The school will involve a five days, full immersion of lectures as well as practical exercise in the development and use of modules for Biometric systems.

PARTICIPANT APPLICATION

The school will be open to about 40 highly qualified, motivated and pre-selected students. Phd students, post-docs, young researchers or industrial professionals in the field are encouraged to apply. The lectures will be given by several outstanding experts in the field, from both academia and industry.
The expected school fees will be in the order of 1,100 for Phd students and 1,600 for others (subject to change). The fees will include full board accommodation, all courses and handling material.
Applicants may submit a short paper (6 pages maximum, original and unpublished work) on their recent research activity. A scholarship will be awarded to the best paper presented by the students. The paper will be published, together with the lecturer's contributions, in an edited book in the Springer Verlag Lecture Notes Series in Computer Science.

Send a filled application form (download from http://biometrics.uniss.it or http://www.computer-vision.191.it/Biomet-School.html)
together with a short curriculum vitae to: Massimo Tistarelli - tista@uniss.it

Advance pre-registration is strictly required by February 15th 2007

The 4th Summer School on Biometrics will be held in conjunction with:

5th IEEE Workshop on Automatic Identification Advanced Technologies (AutoID 2007)
