Full professorship in Communication and Cognition, Tilburg, THE NETHERLANDS

http://erec.uvt.nl/vacancy?inc=UVT-EXT-2011-0517

The Tilburg center for Communication and Cognition (TiCC) is looking for an enthousiastic and
competent colleague for the position of Full Professor.

 	Excellent young candidates who do not yet qualify for a full professorship, are also
invited to apply, and will initially be offered an associate professorship.

 	Full details can be found here
[http://erec.uvt.nl/vacancy?inc=UVT-EXT-2011-0517] .

 	MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES The candidate is expected to initiate and conduct fundamental and
applied research in the Creative Computing (CC) research program. Within the program, the research
currently focuses on computational modeling of cognitive processes, with application domains in
language, vision, games and social signal processing. Furthermore, the candidate contributes
(both in terms of teaching and organization) to the teaching program Communication and Information
Sciences, in particular in the track Human Aspects of Information Technology (HAIT) and in the new
track Data Journalism. The candidate has an important task in acquiring external projects and in
managing tasks on the department and faculty level. Experience with applying computational
techniques to humanities research in general is considered a bonus.

 	PROFILE The responsibilities that come with this function call for a scientist with a
strong research and teaching background, preferably in computational linguistics, artificial
intelligence, data mining or other relevant areas.

 	THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE:
- has a PhD thesis in a relevant discipline and has published in top international publication
media;
- has shown the ability to raise external funding for research;
- has expertise in one or more of the domains covered by the research program Creative Computing,
with a preference for Language and Communication as application area;
- has clear and proven managerial and leadership qualities;
- is willing to stimulate and support the development of collaboration across departments within
the Tilburg School of Humanities;
- has proven experience and affinity with research using different methodologies within a
multidisciplinary context;
- has proven academic teaching experience;
- is able or willing to learn to communicate in Dutch.

 	TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT Initially the selected candidate will apply for a temporary full-time
contract during five years (starting with a one year contract which can be continued with four
years). After three and a half years the performance will be evaluated with respect to the quality
of research, education and management as well as with respect to the results and future expectations
of acquiring sufficient external funding.
A permanent and full-time position after five years is dependent on the positive outcome of this
evaluation. The level of the position will depend on the experience of the candidate. Tilburg
University is rated among the top of Dutch employers and has excellent terms of employment.
Selected candidates will be ranked in the Dutch university employment system. The starting gross
salary is (minimal) 4.902,- up to (maximal) 7.142,- euro per month (for a full-time appointment as
full professor). Researchers from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a tax-free allowance
equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The university will apply for such an allowance on their
behalf. The Tilburg School of Humanities will provide assistance in finding suitable accommodation.
The university offers very good fringe benefits (it is one of the best non-profit employers in the
Netherlands), such as a holiday allowance, an options model for terms and conditions of employment
and excellent reimbursement of moving expenses.
